The multimedia museum was created in the space of a former mechanical workshop inside the Mining Park-Museum at Abbadia San Salvatore. Mine, Cinnabar, Mercury, Amiata: these words, which are placed at the beginning of the path, enclose a network of stories connected to the narrow passages in the mountain. They are stories about alchemy and scientific discoveries; they are almost magic, but they are also about miners, work, and demands. The multimedia museum goes over them.

The path touches upon the topic of myth through the figure of Mercury, the messenger of the gods, featuring fascinating effects and ancient verse. Afterwards, the visitor will access videos and maps to discover the Monte Amiata area, the minerals coming from it and the society that developed around the mine. Interviews, videos and objects placed in the miners’ cabinets show tales of everyday life, of work, and of social demands.

The project won the Silvia Dell’Orso Prize in 2017.
