Volterra is a magical town, as anyone who has been there knows, and its stratified layers of history are full of little deceptions. The still shadow of the sundial stands out against a revolving world, following the outline of the Roman theatre. The imposing Basilica San Giusto sways of that its bells can ring. The camera eye moves jerkily in a circle, like a clock hand. The same eye chases after an event that upsets the furnishings in the main room of the criminal mental hospital, but it is always late. The same eye precedes the action in the cloister, never being overtaken by the event but it is always early.
