Milan, Palazzo del Senato, 1984

Milan, a large PVC pyramid covers the entire space of the courtyard in front of the Palazzo del Senato. The structure is supported by 11,000 cubic metres of hot air and inside it a few monitors, arranged like another upside-down pyramid, reassemble the image of a stage inhabited by three female dancers. Entering this architecture is like entering a vast screen, a synthetic space created by a large bubble of hot air in the centre of which an unstoppable gesture and sound machine pulsates; the dancers shift in an attempt to recompose their logical wholeness while an orange moves from screen to screen. In these moves the empty space between one monitor and the next becomes the air space of freedom where the spectator’s imagination does the work.
